ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Self Portrait, also called Autoportrait Self Portrait is an oil painting on wood panel, from 1929, in which artists Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980) depicts herself driving a green Bugatti. She owned a yellow Renault, but thought the Italian car was much more elegant. In it, she is fashionably dressed: Hermes scarf, long leather gloves and red lips. The geometric composition is a nod to Cubism, but still relying on the conventional. Using full, pure colours, the work has a metallic sheen. Originally commissioned for a German fashion magazine, afterwards, it became famous for its depiction of the new independent woman.
